Retaining Walls

Retaining walls that hold the line — and look good doing it

Structural and decorative walls built the right way: proper drainage, real backfill, and engineer-backed plans where the grade demands it. Block, natural stone, and boulder — matched to your home and built to stay put.

Why It Matters

A wall is only as good as what's behind it

Most failed retaining walls in the Houston area don't fail because of the block — they fail because water had nowhere to go and the soil pushed until something gave. We build from the drainage out: gravel backfill, drain pipe, geogrid where the height calls for it, and a proper footing under it all. The result holds back the grade, protects your foundation, and turns an awkward slope into usable, good-looking space.

What We Build

Retaining wall work, done right

From a low seat wall around the patio to an engineered structural wall holding back a full grade change — one licensed crew for all of it.

Structural retaining walls

True load-bearing walls that hold back a grade change, protect a foundation, or level a sloped yard. Footed, reinforced, and drained to carry the soil pressure for the long haul.

Decorative & seat walls

Low walls that define a patio, frame a fire pit, or add built-in seating and a finished edge. All the masonry craft, none of the wasted yard.

Raised planter beds

Stone and block planter walls that lift your garden out of the clay, keep mulch where it belongs, and tie the landscaping into the hardscape.

Raised patios & pool walls

Raised patios, spa surrounds, and pool decks that need a wall to hold the fill. Built to the same standard as the pool itself, and finished to match.

Drainage & backfill

Gravel backfill, filter fabric, and weep or drain-pipe systems behind every wall. This is the part you never see — and the part that decides whether the wall lasts.

Block, natural stone & boulder

Segmental block for clean structural lines, natural stone veneer to match your home, or boulder walls for a rugged, organic look. We help you pick what fits the job and the budget.

Built To Stay Put

Drainage and geogrid, so it never bulges

A wall that leans, cracks, or bulges is almost always a drainage and reinforcement problem — not bad block. We build to prevent it from day one.

  • Real drainage behind every wall

Clean gravel backfill, filter fabric, and a drain pipe so water leaves instead of pushing on the wall.

  • Geogrid reinforcement

On taller walls we tie the wall back into the soil with geogrid layers, so the whole hillside works with the wall instead of against it.

  • A proper footing

A compacted, level base course under the frost-free line here in Texas keeps the wall from settling or tipping over time.

Engineered Where It Counts

Permits handled, plans backed by an engineer

Once a wall passes a certain height, code in most Texas jurisdictions calls for an engineered design and a permit. We handle that part so you don't have to.

  • Engineer-backed structural plans

For taller or load-bearing walls we bring in engineered plans so the design matches your soil and grade — not a guess.

  • Every HOA and city permit

We pull the permits and handle the paperwork, so your wall is inspected, approved, and done by the book.

  • Matched to your home

We finish the wall in brick or stone that ties into your house and the rest of your masonry, so it looks built-in, not bolted-on.

Common Questions

Retaining walls, answered

Any time you're holding back a change in grade — a sloped yard you want to level, soil washing toward the house, a raised patio or pool that needs the fill held in place, or a garden bed you want lifted. If part of your yard is fighting gravity, a wall is usually the fix.

Usually, yes. Most Houston-area jurisdictions require an engineered design and a permit once a wall passes a set height (often around four feet of exposed wall, but it varies by city and HOA). We check the local code for your address, bring in engineered plans when they're required, and pull every permit for you.

Segmental concrete block for clean, structural lines; natural stone veneer when you want the wall to match your home's brick or stone; and boulder walls for a rugged, natural look. We walk you through what suits the job, the site, and the budget before anything is ordered.

Three things: a compacted, level footing so it can't settle; gravel backfill and a drain pipe so water leaves instead of pushing on the wall; and geogrid reinforcement on taller walls that ties the wall back into the hillside. Get those right and the block barely matters — get them wrong and the best block still leans.

Absolutely — it's one of the best uses of the space. A low wall around a patio or fire pit can carry a capped seat, and a raised wall can hold a built-in planter bed. You get the structural job and the finished, usable feature in a single build.

It depends on length, height, material, and how much drainage and reinforcement the grade calls for — a low decorative seat wall is very different from an engineered structural wall. Decorative and seat walls typically start from around $65 per square foot of wall face; structural, engineered walls are quoted per project.
